By Air – Mull has no regular scheduled air services although there is a grass public airstrip at Glenforsa on the island (www.glenforsaairfield.co.uk). The nearest International Airport is Glasgow and a car can easily be hired for the two hour drive to Oban where you can board the car ferry across to Mull (more details below). Tobermory, the ‘capital’ of Mull, is one hour’s drive from Kilfinichen and Glenforsa is 40 minutes away. There is a seaplane service from Glasgow to Tobermory, the full details of which can be found at www.lochlomondseaplanes.com.
By Sea – There is a car ferry service from Oban on the Mainland to Craignure on the island and the crossing takes approx 45 minutes. We would recommend you book your car in advance. In addition there is a crossing from Lochaline to Fishnish on a first-come-first-served basis which takes approx 20 minutes but is a longer journey by road once you are on the Island. However, it may be worth considering if you are travelling to/from Fort William or the North. Ferry services are operated by Caledonian MacBrayne and further information and timetable details can found at www.calmac.co.uk.
Public Transport – There are good rail links from Glasgow Central Train Station to Oban (www.networkrail.co.uk).
A bus service runs from Craignure to the Iona ferry.
Craignure – Craignure is a small port for passenger ferries. Here you will find a tourist information office, garage, public WC, Spar shop, pub and eateries. As you leave Craignure you will find the roads quickly revert to the traditional single track roads common on the island. Regular passing places are generally indicated by tall black & white marker poles. If you are enjoying a leisurely drive then please be mindful and allow any following traffic to pass you at one of these points. Always keep to the left at these passing points and never park in a passing place no matter how wonderful the view!
Craignure to Derryguaig Smiddy (by car):
On disembarking the ferry turn RIGHT signposted Tobermory and Salen. Continue along this road for approximately 11 miles where you enter the town of Salen. Pass the Spar Shop and Salen Hotel on your right then take the first left – signed Gruline, Kinlock and Ulva Ferry.
On leaving Salen the road becomes single track. Please adhere to the Island rules and regulations for driving on single track roads (www.holidaymull.co.uk/mull/roads).
After 2 – 3 miles the road splits, keep left – signed Kinlock B8035. You will pass a church on your left and after approximately 1 mile you will pass over a narrow stone bridge, keep to the road and you will pass Knock House on your right. The road will now skirt the edge of the Loch on your right.
After approximately 4 miles you will pass over a large stone bridge as the road veers right. Take the very first track on your left after the bridge and bear right on the track towards a large stone house. Keep on the track and then bear left in front of the stone house. You will need to go through a gate to reach Derryguaig Smiddy which will be in front of you. Please keep the gate closed at all times.
The journey should take approximately 45 minutes from Craignure.
